Water supply

Our Company buys the raw water from surface sources (mainly accumulation lakes) or from ground sources; it transports the water via intake mains to the water purification plants or to the chlorination stations related to ground sources where it is subjected to complex purification processes in order to transform it into drinking water; it transports the water via water mains in localities where, considering the necessities, it is pumped and/or stoked up in reservoirs and then distributed via public water networks to the customers.

The raw water taken from the sources is analyzed before entering the water treatment plant; it is also analyzed every hour, 24 hours/day in the water treatment plant and then, the drinking water distributed via the public water networks is sampled and analyzed daily from a multitude of random points in the system.

The daily water quality bulletin is posted on the company webpage where it can be consulted or downloaded.

Surface and ground water sources.

surface sources:

– 3 lakes: Tarnita, Gilau and Somesul Cald lakes – they service Cluj area system (including Gherla and Dej); Varsolt lake services Zalau area system and Simleul Silvaniei;

underground sources:

– 6 underground well systems servicing Aghiresu Sat, Mt. Baisorii, Capusu Mare (with Capusu Mic, Dangaul Mare, Balcesti), Jibou, Cehu Silvanei, Romanasi;
– Floresti well system servicing Cluj area system;
– The underground source from Valea Sacuieu servicing Huedin area system

WATER PURIFICATION

Gilau Water Treatment Plant (Cluj) was modernized in subsequent investment stages; the last one was finalized in 2010.

Varsolt Water Treatment Plant (Salaj) was modernized between 2008-2013.

The underground water sources servicing Huedin, Jibou and Cehu Silvaniei were modernized between 2008-2013.

INTAKE MAINS AND WATER MAINS

INTAKE MAINS AND WATER MAINS are high capacity pipes transporting raw water from sources to the water treatment plants or to the chlorination installations (in the case of underground sources) or from the water treatment plants to the localities (or between localities).

During 2008-2011 a new 22 km intake main between Gherla and Dej was constructed, thus the inhabitants of Dej and the surrounding rural area can now benefit from excellent quality drinking water from TarnitaLake purified in Gilau Water Treatment Plant.

Within the same period, another 8 km with the diameter of 1,400 mm of water mains between Gilau and Cluj-Napoca were also rehabilitated, as well as the 9.9 km of the Salsig-Ulciug water main servicing Cehu Silvaniei.

The fact that due to geographic conditions, for example, the two lines of Gilau – Cluj-Napoca water mains function gravitationally is an advantage. Also, another important water main (Varsolt – Zalau), functions as well gravitationally thus reducing the cost for pumping water.aductiune_-1Aductiune_2

REZERVOIRS

REZERVOIRS are necessary for compensating hourly flow variations in case of breakdowns and in order to ensure the flow needed for fire extinguishing and, as a rule, ensures approx. a third of the daily consumption. A various number of reservoirs were constructed/rehabilitated within each of the four major investment programs unfolded by the Company since 1997 to the present day.

WATER PUMPING STATIONS

WATER PUMPING STATIONS are necessary where, due to the terrain configuration or where during some hourly periods (of high consumption), water can not reach gravitationally.

During 2008 – 2013, 12 water pumping stations were constructed or rehabilitated.

WATER DISTRIBUTION NETWORKS

A series of newly emergent residential areas in the last years in the cities, as well as older streets did not yet have water networks. Also old water networks or made of old materials made many problems to our customers because of the frequency of the breakdowns that needed interventions and thus the interruption of water.

All the four major investment programs since 1997 to 2013 also had a modernization and construction of new water networks component.

Only during 2008 – 2013, 143 km of water networks were constructed or rehabilitated on 242 streets from the eight municipalities and cities serviced in Cluj and Salaj counties.

At the end of 2013, SOMES Water Company had in administration 2,428 km of water networks.
